Radiation Oncology Department Health Physics Thesis Master Program

Department of Radiation Oncology

1. General Information

The Department of Radiation Oncology was founded at 2001 with the contribution of Assistant Professor Dr. Durmuş Etiz. After the completion of the oncology building and radiotherapy center, training and radiotherapy services started in May 2004. The center, which served with a linear accelerator and a Cobalt teletherapy device at the time of its establishment, still continues to provide training and treatment services with two linear accelerators and a brachytherapy device. The center also has a 12-bed shuttle service. The center, which treats 1200 patients per year, has papers at national and international congresses and publications of articles scanned in international scientific indexes (5 Articles/year).

Within the Department; Intensity modulated radiotherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy, respiratory monitoring, image-guided radiotherapy, brachytherapy applications can be performed. There are 2 water phantoms, dosimetric systems, in-vivo dosimetry and phantoms required in medical physics education.

Our department continues its education and research activities with 3 faculty educational members, 2 expert physicists and 6 research assistants.

2. Title Conferred

Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a master's degree (M.Sc.) in Health Physics.

3. Level of Qualification

Health Physics Science Specialist

4. Acceptance Requirements

In applications to the Health Physics Program in the Health Sciences Institute, Radiation Oncology Department, the applicants must be graduated from the Physics Bachelor, Physics Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Energy Engineering and/or Nuclear Physics Engineering Departments of the Faculty of Science and Literature or Engineering or candidates who have graduated from Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Departments of Engineering Faculties must have a double major in Physics Department. The applicant must have a minimum score of 55 in the numeric section of academic personnel and postgraduate education entrance exam, the certified foreign language score must be minimum 50 and undergraduate graduation grade point average must be at least 2.0 in the 4-point system.

5. Acceptance of Former Educations

This is determined by the Regulations by the Board of Higher Education.

6. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

The student must succeed all lectures that were selected. And the average score must not be under CC. The student must complete minimum 21 national credits and 120 ECTS credits and submit a successful graduate thesis.

7. Program Profile (Objectives)

The main purpose of this program is to train professional Health Physicists who “know the effects of radiation on human health and the environment, the principles of radiation safety and radiation protection and shielding, have personally experienced every step of the application of radiotherapy devices, can safely use radiation and radiation measuring devices in medical and environmental applications, able to perform medical physics duties in radiology and nuclear medicine clinics”.

8. Program Qualification (Outputs)

Students who complete the program will become competent and well-equipped Health Physicists and gain the necessary experience and knowledge for the workflow of Radiation Oncology, Radiology and Nuclear Medicine clinics, mechanical and dosimetric quality controls of devices, and treatment planning.

9. Employment Opportunities

Graduates will be able to work in public institutions (Ministry of Health, Universities…), as well as in the private sector and research centers. Currently, at least one medical physicist (health physicist) must be employed in each Radiation Oncology clinic. In the coming years, this obligation is expected to be fulfilled in radiology and nuclear medicine clinics as well. In obtaining the license required for the establishment of a radiotherapy center, the employment of a health physicist in the institution is required by the Nuclear Regulatory Authority. In addition to these, graduates can be employed as researchers and/or lecturers at various Institutes, Faculties and Schools.

10. Access to Higher Educational Programs

Holders of this degree may apply to doctorate programs.

11. Exams, Measurement and Evaluation

Measurement and Evaluation for each course are described in the “course information forms”.

12. Graduation Requirements

Graduation Requirements are described in the Qualification Requirements and Regulations above.
