Department of History

1. General Information
The Department of History was restructured under the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Osmangazi University with the Decree Law No. 496 on August 18, 1993, after being part of Anadolu University. With the inclusion of evening education starting in the 1998–1999 academic year, the department's capacity increased, and as of the 2024-2025 academic year, 29 faculty members and staff are employed in the department.

The department's primary goal is to educate qualified individuals who are competent in their field, intellectually well-rounded, and well-prepared from a humanitarian perspective. In addition to undergraduate education, the department also offers master's programs in Medieval History, Early Modern History, Modern History, and the History of the Republic of Turkey, as well as a doctoral program in History under the Institute of Social Sciences.

The department currently consists of the following subfields:

2. Degree Awarded
Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a Bachelor’s degree in History.

4. Admission and Registration Requirements
General admission requirements for both Turkish and international students are valid for starting the program.

5. Recognition of Prior Learning
Recognition of prior formal education in Turkish higher education institutions, including vertical, horizontal, and intra-university transfers, is carried out in accordance with the regulations set by the Higher Education Council under the “Regulation on the Principles of Transfer, Double Major, Minor, and Credit Transfer between Associate Degree and Bachelor’s Degree Programs in Higher Education Institutions.”

Outside of formal education in Turkey, for certain computer and foreign language courses, exemption exams are organized at the beginning of each academic semester. Students who pass these exams are exempt from the relevant courses in the curriculum.

6. Qualification Requirements and Regulations
Students must pass all the courses in the program without any FF (Fail), DZ (Unattended), or YZ (Failed) grades. The program requires students to complete a minimum of 240 ECTS credits and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00. There is no requirement for internships or other practical applications for graduation.

7. Program Objectives
The program aims to:

  • Attract talented, responsible young individuals during their secondary education and guide them into the program at the undergraduate level.
  • Provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental aspects of the science of history, ensuring they are prepared for their future in an informed manner.
  • Guide students, particularly those aiming for academic careers, by providing necessary information to make them more knowledgeable in specific subjects and areas.
  • Prepare students aiming for master’s and doctoral studies by equipping them with the necessary skills and knowledge for smooth transitions to graduate programs.
  • Keep students updated with the latest scientific developments in the field of history through organizing academic events such as conferences, congresses, symposia, and panels.
  • Establish connections with national and international institutions and organizations, and encourage active student participation in educational programs such as Erasmus and Farabi.

8. Program Competencies (Learning Outcomes)

  • Ability to conduct independent research or research under supervision.
  • Ability to analyze, evaluate, and design historical data.
  • Development of a critical perspective.

9. Employment Opportunities for Graduates
Graduates of our department can work in public institutions and organizations (e.g., Ministry of Culture and Tourism, National Library, General Staff, Turkish Historical Society, Turkish Language Society, Atatürk Culture Center, Prime Ministry Ottoman and Republican Archives, Foundation Archives, General Directorate of Land Registry and Cadastre) as specialists, instructors, or teachers. They can also find employment in various private institutions.

10. Transition to Higher Degree Programs
Graduates who successfully complete their undergraduate education may apply to graduate programs in their field or related fields, provided they obtain valid scores from the ALES or equivalent exams and have sufficient foreign language proficiency.

15. Facilities
The Department of History employs a total of 29 faculty members, including 12 professors, 8 associate professors, 5 assistant professors, 2 lecturers with PhDs, and 2 research assistants.

The department occupies a total area of 1000 m², with 22 offices and 5 classrooms, including a 55 m² meeting room. All 5 classrooms are equipped with fixed projection devices and computers, and 16 mobile laptops are also available.
