Chemical Engineering (PhD)

1. General Information

Chemical Engineering Department which was established in 1968 offers qualified and innovative education to the students in undergraduate and graduate programs. The aim of the department is to train chemical engineers who are able to establish and maintain the efficiency and sustainability of production processes, to bring solutions to the problems in business activities, to think analytically and critically, and have strong communication skills.

There are three divisions in the program: Chemical Technologies, Unit Operations and Thermodynamics, Process and Reactor Design. Besides various courses with 3 credits (7.5 ECTS), non-credit Seminar (7.5 ECTS), Specialization Field Course (5 ECTS) and MSc Thesis Study (25 ECTS) courses are offered. The Program which has a total of 24 faculty members has experienced and adequate academic staff in the field. Accordingly, the students have a lot of choices to study with different topics such as the recovery and evaluation of waste, reaction kinetics, polymer technology, energy conversion technologies, adsorption, solid-liquid extraction, membrane technologies, electrochemical processes, material synthesis and characterization, mathematical modelling, electrochemical engineering, removal of pollutants from water, wastewater and soil, and surface characterization of solids

15. Department / Program Opportunities

There are 17 Professors, 4 Associate Professors, 3 Assistant Professors, 1 Lecturer, 4 Research Assistants, three of whom have doctorate degree, 2 Chemists and 1 Administrative Staff in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

The department continues its activities in three blocks; one of them is education block and two are laboratory blocks. The education block is a building consisting of four floors. There are 11 classrooms with different student capacities and with a total usage area of 837 m2 in this block. 8 of these classrooms are equipped with fixed projectors. One of the classrooms is in the form of amphitheater and is used for conferences, seminars and trainings supporting the professional development of students apart from classes. In the education block of the department, there are also 29 rooms used as offices by the academic staff in addition to the Head of the Department room, the Secretariat of the Department room, the archive-guest lecturer room, the department meeting room and the student study room.

The laboratories have a total area of 1230 m2 and are located in two one-story laboratory blocks. In these blocks, there are three laboratories where undergraduate program experiments are carried out and four Research Laboratories in which research studies are carried out. In addition, 19 Research Rooms (one allocated to part-time students and postgraduate students), GC-MS, Glass-Asset Storage, Balance Room, Chemical Storage and Temporary Waste Storage Room, two staff rooms for chemists and a room with the deionized water preparation equipment are located in the laboratory blocks. In research laboratories, there are equipments such as BET device, FTIR spectrophotometer, gas chromatography, potentiostat/galvanostat, UV spectrophotometer and atomic absorption device offered for the use in postgraduate studies.
