Midwifery PhD Program

1. General Information

In the General Assembly of Higher Education Council (YOK) dated on june 19, 2014 an “ The Midwifery PhD program” was decided to establish in the Eskisehir Health Sciences Institute. Associate Professor Doctor Nebahat Özerdoğan  from Eskişehir Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Midwifery  was assigned as head of department on may 13,2014. There are total 6 founder department members that directly or indirectly contributing to our department, 3 of them from Eskisehir Osmangazi University Faculty of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and 3 of them from Eskişehir Faculty of Health Sciences Department of Midwifery. There are 10 members, directly or indirectly contributing to our department.

2. Title Conferred

Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a doctorate degree in the field of midwifery.

4. AcceptanceRequirements

In order to applyto the Ph.D. program, the candidate Is must have a graduate of License midwifery and a Msc degree in the field of midwifery or Birth and Women's Health Nursing from Health Sciences Institutes.

During the lisence program students are required to have completed before graduation the criteria (Regulation on the Determination of Minimum Education Requirements Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, Dentistry, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy and Architecture Training Program, February 02,2008) according to the midwifery curriculum that developed by creating a license to comply with the European Union.  Recommended for program admission requirements shall be considered Eskisehir Osmangazi University Graduate education regulations

5. Recognition of Prior Learning

In Turkish Higher Education institutions, recognition of prior learning, vertical, horizantal and in-house transfers take place in the scope of “Undergraduate Students And Higher Education Institutions Switch Between Programmes, Double Major, Minor And Making Transfer Between Credit Institutions Basis Of Regulation” which is determined by The Council of Higher Education.

6. Qualification Requirements and Regulations

Doctorate program consists of at least 8 courses on condition that can’t be less than totally 24 credits for master graduated students, proficiency exam, thesis proposal, specialized field course, and thesis study.  For the students who are accepted with bachelor degree, program consists of at least 16 courses on condition that can’t be less than totally 48 credits, proficiency exam, thesis proposal, specialized field course, and thesis study.  Proficiency exam, thesis proposal, specialized field course, and thesis study have no credits and evaluated as successful/unsuccessful.

For the doctorate program maximum time to complete required courses successfully is 2 years for the master graduated students and 3 years for graduated students. The students, who can’t complete courses with credits or don’t have minimum GPA of 3.00/4.00, should notify in written to Head of Department if they will continue or not. A new advisor can be assigned to the student who wants to continue to the program.

Proficiency exam is examination of if the student has sufficient knowledge about the essential topics and doctorate study, after the student has completed the courses successfully with a GPA of 3.00/4.00.

Doctorate proficiency exam is done in two parts as written and verbal. The average of written and verbal exam results should be at least 75/100.The Committee of doctorate proficiency decides with assessing advices of the examination jury and written and verbal exam results, if the student is successful or not with absolute majority. This decision is notified with an official report to the institute by Head of the Department within 3 days after the proficiency exam.

7.Program Profile (Objectives)

The purpose of this program is to educate science experts has the following properties:

1.  Have gained scientific understanding and can convert to skills the knowledge have in the field of midwifery expertise in own field, having comprehensive and contemporary knowledge and creative and critical thinking skills.

2. Sensitive to at the national  and international level, individuals, families and communities health problems and care needs, health protection, can use a multidisciplinary approach and supported the community methods development for the solution of health problems, in the field of midwifery.

3. Can access the information regarding Midwifery concept principles and methods and can be evaluated them, capable of scientific research, can be transferred acquired knowledge and skills  to application area, can be used teaching principles and methods that in the field of midwifery.

8.Program Outcomes

Our graduates;

1. Can be Planning and applied research independently , evaluate the results achieved and may provide the benefit of mankind.

2. Can work in midwifery management and administrative tasks.

3. Can determine the family and community health-related needs that can be met with midwifery initiatives at each individual's environment.

4. Can be planning midwifery care laid down by the requirements scope of midwifery diagnostic process.

5. Can apply midwifery care, check and evaluate.

6. Can determine the training needs of Patient and healthy people related to health .

7.  Can prepare the appropriate training plan to the specified requirements.

8.  Can apply the planned training, evaluate this results.

9. Can apply the treatment given in writing, except emergencies.

10. Can make the task of legislation entered into force In family medicine practice.

9. Occupational Profiles of Graduates

Holders of this degree might be employed in a variety of domestic and foreign universities,faculties, institutes and colleges as a lecturer or researcher. They can also act as experts in the relevant section of all public and private health institutions.

10. Access to Further Studies

Students who have PhD degree can continue to study inpost doctorate programs in their own or related fields.

12. Graduation Requirements

The PhD degree diploma is given to the student who is successful at thesis defense, and other conditions, after is submitted specified number of bounded copy of PhD  thesis that is determined by institute council, to health Sciences Institute Directorate and whose form of is accepted as appropriate.

15. Department Resources

Institute of Health Sciences has 12 students total of 22 computers, including computers with internet connection in the classroom. There are computers with internet connection in the rooms of the faculty members. There are in  Faculty of Health Sciences; 8 classrooms 580 m² in size with a total capacity of 450 students , 2 lecture theaters in size 230 m² with a total capacity of 220 students, 3 vocational skills laboratory in size 125 m² with a total capacity of 70 students, a  computer laboratory in size  31 m²  with a total capacity of 24 students and social space 77 m²  in size.
