1. General Information
Department of Microbiology was constituted by Dr. Filiz AKSIT in 1977. While it was served as a single laboratory including Microbiology, Biochemistry, Hematology and Blood Bank at first, it located to a place designed for Microbiology Department in 1981, and microbiological tests for routine, education and research were enriched in terms of the number, variety and quality; first comprehensive and reliable epidemiological data were started to be obtained relevant to microbiology of infectious diseases in Eskisehir region. Our department was relocated to Meselik Campus of our University in 1990. Currently it serves with divisions of Bacteriology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, Parasitology, Virology-Immunology-Serology, Molecular Microbiology, Sterile Material and Media Preparation, Decontamination and Washing, Sample Acceptance in the Central Laboratory of Hospital for 24 hours. Our department is connected to Laboratory and Hospital Information Systems (LIS and HIS) and there is a meeting room.
Teaching staff of our department lecture the microbiology courses to Medical Faculty, as well as Health Services Vocational School, Faculty of Health Sciences and Faculty of Dentistry in our university. In addition, Anadolu University Faculty of Pharmacy microbiology courses were conducted for 20 years and contributed to Anadolu University Open Education Faculty Programs (Book writing and TV courses) by our department. Our department also has a doctoral program.
Our department accepts research assistants through the Medical Specialization Exam (TUS), and at the end of the 4-year education, a “Medical Microbiology” specialization training is provided, which provides the authority to manage a hospital Clinical Microbiology Laboratory, and a subspecialty training is provided in the Medical Mycology Science Field.
In our department laboratories, all types of cultures (aerobic, anaerobic, microaerophilic) are performed for the diagnosis of bacterial and fungal infections, and microorganism identification and antimicrobial susceptibility tests are performed by both manual methods and automated systems. All types of microscopic examinations, with or without stain including fluorescent staining, are performed. There are many bacteriological, virological, parasitological and mycological immunodiagnostic and molecular diagnostic tests for the diagnosis of infectious diseases. In addition, in vitro allergy tests supported by specific IgE, total IgE, ECP and phadiop tests are performed.
