1. General Information
Department of Microbiology was constituted by Dr. Filiz AKSIT in 1977. While it was served as a single laboratory including Microbiology, Biochemistry, Hematology and Blood Bank at first, it located to a place designed for Microbiology Department in 1981, and microbiological tests for routine and research were enriched in terms of the number, variety and quality; first comprehensive and reliable epidemiological data were started to be obtained relevant to Microbiology of Infectious Diseases in Eskisehir region. Our department was relocated to Meselik Campus of our University in 1990. Currently it serves with Divisions of Bacteriology, Mycology, Mycobacteriology, Parasitology, Virology-Immunology-Serology, Molecular Microbiology, Steril material and Media preparation, Decontamination and washing, Patient admission in the Central Laboratory of Hospital and Emergency Laboratory for 24 hours. Our department is connected to Laboratory and Hospital Information Systems (LIS and HIS) and there is a conference room and a library including internet.
Teaching staff of our department lecture the Microbiology lessons and summer internships to Medical Faculty, Vocational School of Health Services and Eskisehir Health High School in our university since 1981. In addition, Microbiology lessons of Faculty of Pharmacy had been carried out for 20 years by our department. Our department has taken place in Faculty of Open Education Programs (Book writing and TV courses) of Anadolu University. Master and PhD programs are also available in our department.
Medical doctors are admitted as research assistant by Medical Specialty Exam (TUS) and after four years of education, Medical Microbiology Specialist title is given to them in our department. During the education of research assistants, theoretical and practical lessons according to core curriculum are given, student laboratory practices of Medical Faculty, SHMYO and ESYO are prepared and performed by them, at least two seminars and four articles were prepared. They were included to routine clinical laboratory serving in all units of our department. Finally all activities of them are followed and evaluated by a certificate.
All culture methods for bacteria and fungi (aerobic, anaerobic, microaerofilic, 5-10% CO2 incubator, etc.) are performed; identification and antimicrobial susceptibility tests are carried out by using both manual and automated methods (Phoenix, Bactec 9240 automated blood culture, Bactec 460 radiometric Mycobacteria, etc.). All stained and native microscopical microbiological examinations including fluorescent staining are performed. Parasitological tests based on microscopical examination including direct fresh examination, concentration and staining examination, FAT and culture techniques are performed.
Immunological and serological based tests including salmonellosis, brucellosis, syphilis, infectious mononucleosis, viral hepatitis (HAV, HBV, HCV, HDV, HEV) TORCH (Toxoplasma, Rubella, CMV), other viral and parasitic diseases (measles , mumps, HIV, rotavirus, RSV, Parvovirus, Echinococcosis, Leishmania, Amibiazis, etc.) are carried out by mostly automated systems. In addition, in vitro allergy tests supported by specific IgE, total IgE, ECP and phadiatop tests are performed. PCR and newer qualitative and/or quantitative nucleic acid-based tests for detection of Hepatitis-B, Hepatitis-C, cytomegalovirus, tuberculosis, herpes simplex virus 1 and 2, Parvovirus, Papillomavirus infections can be performed in Molecular Microbiology Laboratory in our department.
